Leeuwin Art Series

Tonight felt like some nice wine. Took out the Leeuwin Art Series that I bought almost a year ago in Perth, Australia. The 2004 and 2005 Art Series Chardonnay. One of the best wines to come out of Australia. Perhaps I was tired from all the walking and felt parched, perhaps its just melancholy.

This is Chloe admiring the bottle (empty) of the 2004 vintage. She loves the smell but does not like the taste of anything alcoholic.

Meiji Jingu (明治神宮)

Some historical outing today. After Chinese Yam Cha at a nice Hong Kong Dim Sum in Ebisu, it was foot trekking and train to Harajuku. The first visit to Meiji Jingu near Harajuku. Meiji Jingu is a Japanese Shinto shrine, dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife Empress Shouken. Emperoro Meiji, who dies in 1912, from the Meiji restoration fame. He supposedly put Japan on the modernisation path.

Meiji literally means "enlightened". So Meiji era means enlightened era. After the emperor's death in 1912, the Japanese diet passed a resolution to commemorate his role in the Meiji Restoration. Upon his death a new tradition of giving the late emperor the name of the era coinciding with his reign was established. Following Meiji, it was Showa and now Heisei. An iris garden in an area of Tokyo where Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken had been known to visit was chosen as the building's location.

Personally, I am unsure if all the Japanese people are revered by the Meiji Restoration, but that is just my personal opinion. Perhaps, just perhaps, they existed more meaningfully or were happier as a civilisation without the influence of American capitalism. After all, Cmdr. Perry did pressure Japan to open itself up with his armada of black ships, something which the Americans are still perpetuating in the world today, until recently.

Alpine PDX 4.150

The Alpine ICE amp I won on ebay finally arrived. It is a 150W X 4 channel Class D amp, with power being supplied by B & O Patented ICE Power.

Although built in China, it exhudes quality and seems to be very well built. Cost me $350 plus shipping $100. In Japan it is retailing for JPY105,000 or $1,200, more than triple the price I paid.

In bridged mode it will put out 300W per channel into 4ohms.

Installation will have to wait till 2009, as most businesses in Japan are closed to 4Jan2009.

河豚 (fugu) or Blowfish

Tonight at fugu restaurant. One of the 慕年会 (bohnenkai) or year end parties. This restaurant is in Ningyocho (人形町)and they use famous Fugu from Shimonoseki (下関)in Yamaguchi (山口県) prefecture。

The whole course is fugu, from sashimi, to the skin, to deep fried fugu and nabe. The taste was great. The dish was accompanied by ひれ酒 (hirezake), where a hot cup of sake comes with an immersed roasted fin of the fugu. Interesting. It gives it a smoky, fishy tinge to the sake. Last dish was josui, a congee like dish.

The restaurant was fully packed and enjoys turnover of up to 3 times daily...We had to sit at the counter, even with reservations. But in such Japanese restaurants, e.g. sushi, teppanyaki, it is better to be seated at the counter so that you can also watch and experience all the action going on at the kitchen behind the counter. Plus you also get the attention of the chef himself.

With such brisk business, no wonder the owner seems to be always smiling.

ww.tc (Girard Perregaux)

Today collected the ww.tc (worldwide time control) from Sowind k.k. Japan. This is the BMW Oracle limited edition of 750pcs worldwide. It runs on GP's Movement GP033C0 Caliber 13.

The movement sports 63 jewels and runs at 28,800vph. Power reserve is an amazing 46hours ! There are very few of these limited edition watches left in the market, new. You're advised to buy it before it disappears, if you like it. You won't regret it.

Carrozeria Subwoofer

Latest addition to my ICE arrived yesterday. Its a Carrozeria active unit, or better known internationally as Pioneer. Its a top of the range Japan only model with a 500W class D amp driven subwoofer. Its also the only model in the current line up that is made in Japan.
It has to be mounted in the trunk of my car, as its too large for the passenger cabin. Weighs a hefty 15kgs ! To be installed this Sunday.

ICE

Recently had been pre-occupied with ICE or In Car Entertainment. First acquisition was a pair of Pioneer Carrozeria TS C06A speakers for the front. Then a Kenwood L909 CD-head unit was installed. Next I ordered a 500W active sub-woofer, but yet to receive it. Just found out that the left tweeter is a bit weak. Will bring back to Autobacs tomorrow. Never realised listening in car can be so enjoyable.

Bento Lunch 5Dec

Today's business lunch was at Iidabashi at a famous Kansai Food restaurant. The Shokado Bento was excellent. Another memorable meal.

Golf 28Nov

Last Friday was golf invite from a client at Kingsfiled Country Club in Chiba. He had hip injury and still have screws in his hip bone. It rained in the morning but weather cleared by then end of the first nine. The autumn leaves were still hanging around.

Fish 27Nov

This is a fish restaurant in Shinbashi. The shop is run by an elderly couple. The husband sometimes catches his own fish. The uni (sea urchin, foreground) was fresh and excellent. One of the best I have eaten so far. It is from the northern territories in Japan, the four islands occupied by Russia. The otoro (fatty tuna) was also good but unexceptional. Defitnirely a place to go back to.

The fired fish is a unique fish called meh hikari (目光) or shiny eyes, as the eyes glow in the deep darkness. The fish is a deep sea fish found only in Fukushima prefecture. You can eat the whole fish, bones and head included. It is really delicious! In the background are mildly salted Ginko nuts or ギナン. Yummy.

Nikon Gear, again!

The Nikon gear I ordered from Australia through ebay finally arrived yesterday. It took a whole 4 weeks. According to the seller, delay was due to customs.

Anyway lucky everything was in order. Looking forward to shooting this weekend with the D300 and the super 70-200mm AFS lens!

Tomorrow and day after will be golfing days again. Took a day's leave tomorrow to go to Karuizawa, playing at the Mitsuinomori Country Club and Saku Resort. Temperature expected to be down to 6deg in that area !

Badd Girls

Visiting friend's birthday, so took him for dinner and later went to Badd Girls: Campus Cafe.

Most of the girls working here are part timers as they are mainly undergrads, or student learning make-up artistry, fashion or hair styling.

Upon request English speaking girls are available. If you're lucky some of them may take a liking to you and give you their phone numbers and email. Not Badd......

Nikon Gear!

Recently ordered the Nikon D300 body and AFS70-200mm lens from Australia. So since I have decided to go into a second Nikon based system, took the opportunity to buy a few stuff in Singapore, with the help of a fellow camera otaku. So eagerly waiting to use the new stuff, hopefully soon.

There has been much debate about the pros and cons of Full Frame vs Cropped Sensors. For me, cropped sensors provide the reach that would costs many thousands of dollars needed for full frame.

Cropped sensors also use the better quality image area of the lenses, and less subject to falloff (reduction in brightness around the edges) caused by light striking the sensor cones at an angle.

The smaller pixel but higher density of smaller sensors allow the same area of a photo to be at higher resolution than full frame.

Singapore Scenes

These photos were shot in RAW mode in Singapore last weekend with the Leica 14-50mm F2.8-3.5 mounted on the E-3. No post processing.

A night scene.

Lumix G1

This is the promotion of the Lumix DMC G1 SLR camera at Bic Camera Yurakucho. It is the World’s First Full-time Live View Digital Interchangeable Lens Camera. It is based on the new Micro Four Thirds System standard that greatly reduces camera size and weight to further enhance the inherent advantages of the original Four ThirdsTM System standard for digital interchangeable lens cameras

Pan Pacific Hotel

Last weekend was at Singapore on the way back from Penang, Malaysia. Stayed at the Pac Pacific Hotel, Marina. Old but nicely renovated room of 41sqm. Only older hotels have such generous sized rooms.

This hotel features the once popular atrium concept, not unlike the former Concorde or Glass Hotel, which is now known as the Holiday Inn Atrium.

View of the colourful lobby from above.

Nice room of 41sqm, with LCD TV and full height glass windows.

The unique service provided by this hotel is the hospitality room provided to guests who have checked out. You can book a room on the 22nd floor to come back for freshening up before you leave the country. I would use this hotel again.

Canary Garden Country Club

This is the Canary Garden Country Club in Chiba. Being peak season, this was one of very few courses avaiulable for golf in Autumn. The cost of green fees is also horrendous, JPY21,600 without lunch ! With highway toll fees and fuel, a round of golf comes up to an atrocious S$400!

The course is long but not fantastic. It has a quite friendly layout and not many blind holes. The fairways are also fairly wide.

Couples in the Park

Yesterday was at a park in Shunjuku with the family. Many couples were spotted so I went clicking away discreeetly, pretending to pan around for Chloe. Here's the interesting pics:

She's laughing now, let's see who has the last laugh.....

There's a hotel nearby....

Don't tell anyone I showed you....or else...

I hope I gave her the right answers...

I wonder why he brought a change of clothes...

I swear the I saw the water rippled..

Now how do I get her to remove the blanket??

You better say its good!

Now, are you ready? Wait, let me call my mum first....

Is that a spider?

Believe me...Stare long enough and the colour changes.

Ms S

Dinner was with Ms S. She is a CA, or better known as cabin attendant in Japan. Very fun and outgoing personality, is all I can say. Some of my photography circle friends would say this is not bird photography or birding....or is it not? Perhaps a longer lens is needed...

Korea !

This is Calbee Tang or Calbee soup with seaweed. Last week, Wed-Fri was spent in South Korea for work, so it was Korean food all the way, except one pasta lunch. Even the Frutti Di Mare was garlic loaded...

Koreans are really into soups, ginseng and all. All these soups are supposedly nourishing.....Wonder why Koreans need so much nourishment...Must be the bloody cold winter..

Also tried an interesting dish, live prawns cooked on rock salt. Fantastic dish, comparable to Singapore's Drunken Prawns at the popular Seafood joints..The shrimps jump all over the place, and the tricky part is the restaurant provided a few live prawns in a bucket for those more adventurous who like sashimi, (Live and raw!). I had 2 myself but had to pick them prawn head off myself ....awwww....

Pictured above is Korean fish sashimi, cartilege and all. The cartilege has to be eaten ! Anyway I enjoyed the grilled version much more....cartilege or not.
