Golf Green Valley

This is Green Valley Country Club in Bangkok, a Robert Trent Jones designed course within 45mins of BKK. The weather was great (not humid) and the caddy assigned to me could read the greens very well. Not having played any golf since late Dec, my tennis elbow was finally gone and some semblance of my old swing came back. Irons start to fly again although there was an unusual draw to it. Only parred one hole and bogeyed quite a few, not being able to land on the green on the approach shot was punishing my score. Final score 51/50, for which I can't complain.

The bunkers were soft, even 7 iron approaches were returned with sunny side ups! The greens were superb, and with a caddy who has tiger vision, putts were very satisfying if read correctly.

Looking forward to Lakewood tomorrow.

Dinner was at Kuang, a Chinese seafood restaurant in Rang Nam. Starter was sharkfin soup, and mains were Curry Crab, Deep Fried Sea Bass, Stir Fried Clams and Crab Fried Rice. Not forgetting the favourite soup, Tom Kha Gai...

Here's a fellow golfer with the Federbaur beer promoter who volunteered for the pic.

The night endeed with drinks with former colleagues at Soi Cowboy, a pub and bar street filled with farang or foreigners.

新天町

Shintencho in Hakata, today is 建国記念日 or "coming of age day", girls and boys become adults on reaching 20. Girls wear kimono and parade themselves in town. A colourful sight indeed.

ヤマハゲ (yamahage) festival in 福岡 (Fukuoka)

Today in 福岡 Fukuoka. The 鬼 (oni) is related to local folklore called yamahage (ヤマハゲ). In some towns, on the night of 15th Jan, people dress up as demons with masks and straw covering their bodies and "attack" homes. The occupants will prepare replica kitchen knives to wait for the demons. The children are taught to behave themselves and await these attacks. This festival is suppposedly to bring luck to the household and children for the new year. Japanese Sake is prepared during this festival as well.

Fukuoka is filled with nostalgia for me. My first experience in Japan back in Nov96.

New stuff for the New Year

As in many places the world over, New Year is also a time for bargains. In Tokyo, New Year sales starts on 2Jan. Many good deals can be found in department stores in the form of 福袋 (fukubukuro) or lucky bag. Many items are bundled together and sold at steep discounts.
They usually sell out in the first 2-3days as many bargain hunters are abound. I got some new shirts (Lanvin!), ties, belt, shoes, socks etc for work, something I have not done for quite some time.
All the stuff were from either Mitsukoshi (三越)and Matsuya (松屋)。

They are back, amidst the gloomy economy, with retrenchment camps being setup for those who lost their jobs just before the new year. The numbers are climbing...

Nabe dinner for New Year 1Jan

New Year is never complete without an enjoyable dinner with family. As Japan shuts down over the New Year, New Year dinner was eaten at home.

Home made dinner was 鍋物 (nabemono) or hot pot dish. Main ingredients consisted mainly of seafood, Chloe's favourites. Special dish was ズワイガニ (Zuwaigani) or spider crab from 北海度 (Hokkaido).

The dashi or stock used was ちゃんこ鍋 (chanko nabe) or sumo-wresler style soup stock.

Here's Chloe with her fukubukuro from Toys R Us.
