ヤマハゲ (yamahage) festival in 福岡 (Fukuoka)

Today in 福岡 Fukuoka. The 鬼 (oni) is related to local folklore called yamahage (ヤマハゲ). In some towns, on the night of 15th Jan, people dress up as demons with masks and straw covering their bodies and "attack" homes. The occupants will prepare replica kitchen knives to wait for the demons. The children are taught to behave themselves and await these attacks. This festival is suppposedly to bring luck to the household and children for the new year. Japanese Sake is prepared during this festival as well.

Fukuoka is filled with nostalgia for me. My first experience in Japan back in Nov96.
