イカ墨 パスータ (Ikasumi Pasta)

Sunday was at La Zona mall in Kawasaki (川崎), favourite shopping mall for the family. Lunch was squid ink pasta at "Garlic & Tomato", our favourite Italian restaurant in La Zona. We ordered "Caprio" size, which is double portion and also a Marinara (Seafood) Pizza.

Although its slightly spicy, Chloe had no problems with the pasta. She loved the squid too, gobbling all the little squid there was (about 8 pieces in all). We all managed to finish the food and skipped dinner.

Paperwork M3

Today submitted the paperwork for the parking permit for the M3. In Japan, you cannot register a car unless the police has given you a parking certificate. Not unlike the COE system in Singapore, the parking certificate ensures that you have a proper parking place to park the car, not whether you can afford to buy the car. Parking in Tokyo cost more than most cars, at US$500 per month in the inner TYO residential areas and up to US$1,000 in the CBD office area.
With the submission to the police station, the permit will be issued on Tue, thereafter to be sent to the dealer. The dealer will register the car and inform you when its ready for collection. In the purchase, I had negotiated for a free "coating" or polishing in our lingo, and also an engine compartment cleaning. They both come up to about US$160.
I got a good deal for my S2000, with very little depreciation. It was bought from the same dealer 1.5 years ago in Feb07. Now I just need to wait for another 10days.....

Salt 21 Aug

Lunch was at Salt by Luke Mangan with M at New Marunouchi Building (新丸の内ビル). The above is a desert, Sweet Wine custard with Sorbet. My main was Lamb Leg Brick, a slow cooked lamb dish in a spring roll like brick. M had Barramundi, which is a recommended main course for Australian "Salt". Lunch was accompanied by a glass of Tasmanian Chardonnay.

M3 test drive 20 Aug

Today was the day to test drive the M3 SMG II I found, 45,000kms, immaculate condition 02 registered M3 E46. After arriving at the shop, it started to downpour! So waited till the rain subsided. Ths gave me some time to inspect the car.

The car has no dents or scratches, had Panasonic HDD navigation fitted, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. It was a well taken care and loved car.

So when the time came, the shop manager drove me round first then I took over. Having read about the SMG II gearbox and its quirks, I quickly got accustomed to shifting in "s" sequential shift mode. Flooring the accelerator really gave a violent surge and wheelspin in the wet! The torque of this car at 355Nm is as high as an F1 car ! Max torque comes in at 4,900rpm, very usable indeed for overtaking.
The secret lies in the M division (motorsport division) developed S54B32 engine. This is a 3,246cc straight six with Double VANOS infinitely variable valve timing engine. Redline is at 8,000rpm in standard guise. It is coupled to the rear 19X8J rims through an M differential LSD.
The 6 speed SMG was developed with Getrag, and has 11modes including a "track" mode.

With only one drive, I knew this is the car...The 343ps brings back memory of my Jun tuned 350hp Skykline Turbo. Somehow, I wanted to be fully convinced, so asked for a ride in a 280ps standard Fairlady Z. Oh, from the first 200m, it was clear the Fairlady was no match for the M3. The sound and feel of the engine, the feel of the chassis, wasn't quite up to the M's standards. Decision made, decisively...M3 it is...even though there was the option of a Red Nismo version Fairlady Z putting out 350ps lying attractively for sale at a lower price...

New gear!

2 items arrived today for me. 2 dozen golf balls and new gadget.

In one of my recent golf rounds at Pete Dye, I found a wayward ball. It was a Mizuno Cross Eight D301. Since the condition was playable, I decided to give it a try. Whoah! The distance was 1 club longer than the Callaway ERC Hot and HX Tours I was using. So I decided to research into it and found that Mizuno offers a very wide range of golf balls. The Cross Eight range is their top range ball, with eight patterns of cross grooves within the core for greater rebound and distance.

I found that Mizuno even match head speeds to their balls, with recommended head speed for each ball type/model. So instead of the D301 (which flies), I ordered 2 dozens of the T301 (T for tour) which is optimized for driver head speeds of 45m/s, exactly my head speed.

The second item is a GPS receiver that is designed for golfing in Japan It is called "Shot Navi Pocket " or Shot Navigator in your pocket. It has data of over 2,000 golf courses, almost all the courses in Japan and acts like your personal GPS unit at the golf course. Once switched on, it automatically locates the course and hole you're at and starts giving you the distance to the green. It also has the abilkity to keep track of your scores, and the distance you hit with each shot since it is GPS based. New course data can be downloaded from the net. What a gadget !

I look forward to the next round of golf...

成田の森 カントリー クラブ

Today was golf at Naritanomori Country Club. It was quite a distance actually, getting off 10kms after Narita Airport Interchange and a further 25mins drive. It was a bad golfing day....Scoring 56/55, consistently bad...

I can blame all and sundry including this duck like bird, but the course condition was poor and the layout funny. Its no wonder this course had changed name 3 times and is now managed by PGM (Pacific Golf Management).

I could not score any pars until the last 4 holes where I managed 2 pars. A forgettable day indeed.

M3 SMG II (E46)

Yesterday was at 埼玉 (Saitama) to see a 2003 BMW M3 SMG II. Recently got the urge to change car....The M3 (E46 model) has the S54B32 a 3.2L straight six powerplant putting out 343hp/7,900rpm. (Click the link on the title to read about the M3)

This car is a real beaut!. And brute. Tap the throttle above 4,000rpm and a raspy roar comes out from the exhausts. 4 beautiful tail pipes at the rear.

The SMG II is a sequential shift box that has 11 different modes. At the highest revs, it shifts at 0.08 secs! That's some serious shifting speed...

This car is a 2003 model and has seen 60,000kms by three owners. Not the best of examples but then its low mileage by international standards. In Japan, anything touching 10,000kms pa is high mileage.

I started the car but couldn't test drive it due to insurance reasons, and saw very clear and nice water forming at the tail of the pipes. Very clean combustion. I guess people who owned this car must know how to look after it and would not spare any expense to do so.

Unfortunately the car has been reserved for someone who only telephoned. However, they would contact me should the deal fall through after the Obon weekend, next week. Meanwhile the seach is on....

丸の内 カントリー クラブ

Today was business golf at Marunouchi Country Club in Chiba. The weather was hot (36deg) and everyone endured through the 18holes with ice packs wrapped in towel and strapped around the neck. Thanks to the caddie san for this neat trick for relief.
First nine played 48, buggered one hole with a 9 on a par 5....Focused on the mental game and was back attacking the greens in no time. Managed to stay below the psychological 50 pts level.
After a decent lunch of 淡々緬 (tan tan men) and a nice cool mug of 生ビール (nama biru) was back attacking the greens in no time and had 3 consecutive pars on Holes 2,3,4, all par 4s!

The heat soon caught up and could not sustain the level of focus needed to keep the par run going, especially when it came to the index 1 Par4.

The new Tourstage X-Drive driver is still sweet, but had one O/B shot today into a right dogleg par 5, which I managed to salvage with a double bogey.

Chloe the entertainer at Shibuya...Dec 2007

These were taken in Shibuya in Dec 2007 with the trusty old Canon G7 10MP compact camera.

Colours really look good in Winter as the light comes thru the crisp, clear skies to enhance colours. There was a heart "to care" campaign for charity around that time.

Mama also took a pic at heart wall...
This is the famous and busy junction in Shibuya always shown on news about Tokyo. It is always a popular waiting and meeting area. Shibuya is known to be a favourite shopping area for younger ladies, mainly in their early 20s.

Chloe really liked the windmill area outside Suntory performance hall.

滝 (taki or waterfall) 3 Aug

Taki (滝) or waterfall day on Sunday. We decided to drive to Izu (伊豆)in Shizuoka (静岡)prefecture to catch the sight of some waterfalls and to cool off in the cool streams on a hot summer Sunday. We took the Tomei Expressway and headed towards Numazu Interchange.

First stop was for lunch was at a shrimp restaurant in Numazu called 鬼が島 (onigashima or Devil Island) It specializes in shrimp dishes, so we ordered shrimp set lunch. The portions were huge...

Mine came with some sashimi, which included Aji (Horse Mackerel), Maguro (Tuna), Hotate (Scallops), Sake (Salmon) and Ebi (prawns).

We discovered from the staff that the shrimps were imported from Myanmar. After lunch, it was then off to look for the waterfall, first one is Juren.

The first taki we went to was Jurennodaki (浄蓮の滝) waterfall in Shuzenji. It is 25m high and 7m wide. It is located in the upper stream of Kano River. The lower part is trout fishing area and around the stream therei s plenty of wasabi cultivation using the cleana nd clear water from the fall.

Here's some visitors fishing for trout in the rock enclosed area. Bamboo rods are rented for about $30 per day. You can actually see the trouts swimming in the water, the tricky bit is to get them to bite.

Below are pics of wasabi (わさび)patches next to the water. There is a shop selling wasabi at the falls and their wasabi are harvested from the few patches here.

Here's a closer look at a wasabi plant. They don't come cheap, good ones costing $14 each. Kinda remind me of pineapples, perhaps post radiation contamination

Wasabi Ice Cream galore in this area! I actually tried some later and they tasted like err...Wasabi: Spicy!

Another view of the waterfall, with long exposure on trusty old Slik tripod.

We could not play in the stream at this waterfall as its been "protected" by the trout shop that allows you in only if you rent a rod.

So we decided to drive to a more "publicly accessible" and non-commercialized waterfall. In the guidebook, we found a seven waterfall area called 川津の七滝(kawazunonanadaro or Kawazu's Seven Waterfalls).

On the way we used this interesting interchange, it cricles twice to get you up/down....

Chloe is now able to smile as she could play in the water!

This is a long exposure shot of fall number 4.

A close up of the fall.

On the way home, we stopped by 熱海 (Atami), a well know spa resort area, and stumbled upon a Sapporo Beer Festival.

There was live music by a trio consisting of 2 guitarists and a bongo drummer, playing jazzie tunes of folk and sentimental songs. The atmosphere was great with the cool sea breeze keeping the heat under control..

Everyone there seemed to have a good time. Everything was going for ¥500, including the beer.

Just across the street where the festival was held, I spotted this ソープランド shop....

Tokyo Tower 2 Aug

After Midtown, we decided to go to Tokyo Tower since the sky was looking pretty clear. In my over 2 years in Tokyo, and having stayed just right next to the Tower in a hotel for 3 months, I've never gone up the tower. This despite having eaten lunch at the base of the tower.

Another view of the tower.

In Japan, there is a mascot for everything. Even a tower. Here he is. His name is Noppon, and he also has a brother. And they even have personalities. When Chloe first asked me what it was, I thought it was a pencil....Silly me.

Views from the tower. On some sides, the view was not so good, due to clouds and glare.

Here's a clearer side. You can see the Rainbow Bridge in the distant.

And here's a zoom in of the bridge. You can see the Fuji TV office (globe) in the background, that's in お台場 (Odaiba)!
Another view from the tower, however, we can't see view from the tower, however, today we can't see far enough to catch Mt.Fuji.

You can stand on a glass platform and look down 150m to the ground below. We didn't go up to the 250m level observatory, there was a queue.

Tokyo Midtown Sat 2 Aug

Sat was at Tokyo Midtown, a shopping and food mall that is still considered new in Tokyo. It is located near Roppongi, just across from Roppongi Dori (六本木 取り) on 東外苑取り。 It has very nice shops and interesting brands, although can't say the same for the restaurants. There are a variety of restaurants here, from cafes to bars to food courts to restaurants.

Chloe looking gleeful here...in her favourite polka dot dress..Dunno why she has this fascination with Polka Dots.

Chloe showing her dress off.

Lunch was ハヤシ ライス (Hayashi Rice) at the Tokyo Hayashi Rice Club. Hayashi Rice is a Japanese style curry like stew, usually with beef. You can order it sweet, or spicy, up to your taste.

I ordered the 辛口 (Karakuchi or spicy sauce), with たぷり 牛肉 (tappuri gyuniku or plenty of beef) for $14. It was yummy. Chloe had the Hayashi bun, sweet style, of course.

One of the interesting shops here is Noka Chocolate (http://www.nokachocolate.com/) The entrance looks really cool, so are the prices....

An interesting corridor of shops in Midtown... won't look out of place on a spacecraft.

An interesting Japanese art piece on display. I liked the blue, which is brought out by the Olympus 12-60mm SWD lens, quite impressive....

A trinkets shop displaying its ware..
